Life Events

The church is there for
many of the big events of life

Christenings

Christenings generally take place on the 3rd Sunday of the month, during our Third Sunday service (they can be arranged at other times too).

One of the most important choices we can make for a child is their relationship with God.

In Baptism (Christening), parents and godparents make important choices for the child, who is anointed with oil, washed with water and given a candle.

Baptism is a great way to celebrate a birth, a wonderful opportunity to thank God for their arrival, and the best possible start to their life.

What is the difference between Baptism & Christening?
Nothing. They are two words for the same thing.

Who can get Baptised at St Mary’s?
Anyone who lives in the parish or who comes regularly to church.

Do the parents have to be baptised?
No. Anyone can bring a child for baptism.

Who can be a Godparent?
Anyone old enough to understand what they are saying can be a godparent. Because they will make the baptism promises for their godchild, they must have been baptised themselves.

What does a baptism cost?
Nothing. Baptism is absolutely free.

Are only babies baptised?
No. Anyone who wants to become a Christian begins by being baptised. If you haven’t been baptised and want to talk about it, please speak to the Vicar.

What happens next?
If you are interested in baptism, either for your child or yourself, or just want to know more please call the Church Office on 01730 892552.  We’ll  arrange  a  time  to  meet  and  talk  through  the service.

Weddings

There are many wonderful venues for a wedding, but the  church  offers  more.  We  want  to  help  your wedding to be perfect, and to support you before, during and after the day.

Here are some questions people ask about getting married in church.

Who can get married at St Mary’s?

YOU CAN, if one of you:

  • Have parents who have lived in the parish in your lifetime
  • Have parents who have ever regularly gone to church at St Mary’s

If these don’t apply to you, please speak to us, as it may still be possible to be married in the church, or to arrange a blessing in church after a civil wedding.

Do you have to have been baptised to get married in church?
No

Is it expensive?
A full church wedding, with organist and bells, costs around £916 (in 2019). A simple wedding without music costs as little as £685 (2019)

What if I am divorced?
It is still sometimes possible to get married in church, so please talk to the Rector
